Hugh McIlvanney's book on boxing is a marvellous read and his 3 part Arena documentary "Busby, Stein and Shankly: The Football Men" is a poignant, crafted piece of social history (I hope the BBC will repeat it so I can upgrade my grainy VHS transfer). Wonderful sonorous voice too

In the mid 90s, Hugh McIlvanney wrote and narrated a programme on the BBC called “The Football Men” about Busby, Shankly & Stein and the working class west of Scotland roots that bound all three together. Needless to say he could do great TV as well as great writing. RIP indeed.

"In the west of Scotland, nobody bothers to argue that football is a genuinely popular art form, the theatre of the people," said Hugh #Mcilvanney, who wrote and presented 1997 BBC A series on Matt Busby, Jock Stein and Bill Shankly.
